3rd  Jazz & classical music : 1 may 2011 - 18h30 :   SPIRITANGO Quartet Tribute to Astor Piazzolla

This, our third Jazz and Classical music concert is an homage to Astor Piazzolla (1921 – 1992), composer and bandeononista from Argentina. Piazzolla is considered the most important tango musician from the second half of the 20th century. He was first attracted by jazz and the music of Bach but at the age of 15 years old he turns for good towards tango. Later, under the influence of Nadia Boulanger he will enrich this popular music with a sophisticated and contemporary sound which will culminate in the several Tango Nuevo quintets which he form and directs. He works with jazzmen such as Martial SOLAL, Lalo SCHIFRIN and Gerry MULLIGAN and appears with the vibraphonist Gary BURTON at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1987. The concert is recorded and published under the title The New Tango.

In the footsteps of Richard GALLIANO and his remarkable album entitled New York Tango, the SpiriTango Quartet revisits the music that Astor PIAZZOLLA himself defined  as the popular and contemporary music of the city of Buenos Aeres ; Thomas CHEDAL accordion, Fanny AZZURO piano, Fanny Gallois, violin and Benoît LEVESQUE double-base, play the tangos of PIAZZOLLA with a communicative energy and power while all the same associated with infinite charm. Come and discover this fascinating musical story made of suffering and love on the evening of May 1st.
